“It was more like a massive leg up,” DJ and producer Tim Mason retorts following a question about the support of his debut track ‘The Moment’.
The British star didn’t enter the electronic music world quietly, sneaking in under the radar. Instead he made a speaker erupting impression that caught the attention of music greats like Pete Tong, Tiesto, Laidback Luke, the entire cohort of the Swedish House Mafia and many more. The 26-year-old made such an impact that Steve Angello himself rang him up the day after the release to sign the Brighton talent to his label, Size Records.
“To put so much time and energy into a record and to have one of dance music’s legends reach out and want to get behind you as an artist, I don’t think words can describe it,” Tim says. “I love Size, Steve’s really built something special, so much talent, all the boys are wicked to be around and I love being part of it.”
Despite only releasing ‘The Moment’ last year, the Brit quickly became known for his big room anthems and his ability to revitalise mainstream tracks. On the brink of 2012, Tim released ‘Anima’, the follow up to his massive debut single and a track that controlled dance floors across the globe on New Years Eve, finishing off the year in style – not bad for something that was made in a week! And if that wasn’t enough his remixes of tracks such as ‘Pass at me’, ‘Where Dem Girls at’ and “Stars come out’ gained the approval from all the original artists.
“I think there’s a balance of giving people what they expect against what they didn’t know they wanted,” Tim says. “It’s always evolving and always becoming more varied it’s just the nature I guess, you can go back as far as you like and it’s still the case.”
So how does the already acclaimed artist create such impressionable tracks? “Every track starts differently,” Tim tells me. “Sometimes it starts with an idea, sometimes it starts with a sound or a groove. I just get inspired and roll with it and inspiration comes when you’re least expecting it too, usually in the shower when you can’t get to something to write it / record it and you have to keep humming it for ages and ages”
But even with his relatively short career, the talented Brit is trading the humble South coast clubs for roaring crowds this summer as he travels to Ibiza for the first time and plays Creamfields this August Bank Holiday. “I’m so excited to go to the clubs I’ve day/night dreamed about during my youth and be behind the decks,” the newcomer says. “I’m really looking forward to it. My set at Cream is going to be a little bit special and I think they’re going to record it so you can hear it for yourself! This year there are some really big tunes taking the season by storm, Third Party have been working on a new one that so far only SHM have been playing, it sounds seriously huge so will be a big one this summer for sure.”
“Size Matters was at Ministry of Sound a couple of Saturdays ago, which was absolutely amazing, especially seeing as the whole crew was down there. Plus there’s other Size Matters stuff happening later in the year as well so watch this space!”And for fans of Size Matters, Tim has some good news too – It’s back!
It’s not just gigs and remixes that one of the newest members of the Size family has been up to though. Over the last six months he’s been putting pen to paper and writing a lot of music that’s due to be released towards the end of this year and start of next. His passion for the industry and the music can be heard in every track he releases and it’s that passion that has helped him go from an up and coming artist to a global star in just over a year. “It’s my first and only love and I love it all. Doing what I do, it’s definitely demanding, especially the travelling and lack of sleep, but I love it, you have to love it.”

Alex, Liverpool: If you could remix any song what would it be and why? Lucid – I Cant Help Myself would have been my answer about a year ago and then I did it. Working on something at the moment, so when you hear it you will know it.
Paul, New York: Which artist has influenced you the most since starting out? I really have a lot of respect for Daft Punk. They’ve got it all for me.
